A reader emails me:

I'veread your "Advice for..." blog posts with interest. They'retruly helpful. But now I've finished thejob market and I have a tenure-track position at a research university. Can you post an "Advicefor Junior Faculty"next?

Okay, here goes:

  • Your focus should be on getting papers published in refereedjournals. Everything else is secondary.
  • Do not be a perfectionist. It is tempting tokeep revising your dissertation chapters until you are completelysatisfied with them before sending them off to a journal. Theproblem is that you may never be completely satisfied. Meanwhile, the editorial review process is unconscionably long, and yourtenure review is approaching. So don't delay. If you just got a jobas an assistant professor at Bigshot University, aim to send yourdissertation research to journals before you arrive at Bigshot tostart teaching.
  • It pays to be a good teacher and a goodcitizen in your department: Your senior colleagues will be morelikely to want to keep you around. But don't deceive yourself intothinking that great teaching or citizenship will make up for apaucity of published research.
  • For women and minorities:
Be especially wary of invitations to sit on university committees.I have noticed that deans and other university administrators liketo promote diversity on their committees. They never seem to figureout
that, as a result of this "tax" on women and minorities, we whitemales are left alone with more time to pursue ourresearch.
  • Attend conferences and give seminars at schools to publicizeyour work and yourself. The people in the audience may one day bein a position to hire you or write letters of evaluation aboutyou.
  • Tenure review committees give a lot ofattention to where papers are published (perhaps too much, in lightof this work by Andrew Oswald). Give each of yourpapers a shot or two at the top journals, such as the AER, JPE, orQJE. Even if you are not confident in the paper, it is worth a tryfor two reasons. First, as author, you are not in the best positionto judge its quality; some people are too fond of their own work, and some are too hard on it. Let the editors decide. Second, theeditorial process is highly imperfect. (Again, see Oswald.) The badnews is that some of your best articles may end up getting rejectedfrom the top journals. The good news that you may get lucky, andsome of your so-so articles may end up published in top journalssimply because they hit the editor's desk when he is in a goodmood.
  • 终身教职评估委员非常在意论文发布的杂志(可能太过在意了,根据work by AndrewOswald)将你的论文投向一、两家顶级刊物,比如说AER(AmericanEconomic Review美国经济评论),JPE(Journal of PoliticalEconomy政治经济学杂志),或者QJE(Quarterly Journal of Economics经济学季刊)。
  • Do not get discouraged by rejection. It ispart of the process. Learn what you can from the editors andreferees and then take your paper to another journal.
  • Be on the lookout for good coauthors among your colleagues andstudents. See My Rules of Thumb for more discussion of thistopic.
  • Avoid activities that will distract you from research. Whateveryou do, do not start a blog. That will only establish your lack ofseriousness as a scholar.
  • Remember that you got into academics in part for theintellectual freedom it allows. So pursue your passions. Do not betoo strategic. Be wary of advice from old fogies likeme.
